History Comes to Life as SVDP 8th Grade Visits Gettysburg

Friday, November 14, the Eighth Grade class journeyed down to Gettysburg. They left town before dawn, promptly at 6 AM ! The class was chaperoned by several eighth grade teachers, some parents, and even Father Richard.

After answering the call of, "when do we eat?" countless times, the first order of business was a stop for breakfast. We continued on the three plus hour trip and happily arrived at the new Visitor's Center, which contains a theater, museum, and the cyclorama, which is a huge 360-degree painting on canvas depicting the Battle of Gettysburg. It was painted during the late 1800s and is truly an amazing work of art.

The next stop was lunch at General Pickets Buffet. The class had fun sampling all kinds of delicious food. After lunch we picked up a step-on guide who gave a very interesting and informative tour of the battlefield. We were able to scale Big and Little Round Top. Following the tour we visited the Maria Schriver House in the town of Gettysburg. This is an historic home, which was built in1860 and has been restored to near-perfect condition.

One last stop for ice cream and we headed home, tired, but full of information about the famous Battle of Gettysburg.

A thank you goes to Mr. Scala for the account of the 8th grade trip.
